Chairs of the Symposium and Board
MEEP 2021 Symposium Chair
Prof Johannes Gescher was appointed Professor for Applied Biology at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in 2011. In 2014 he was additionally appointed as group leader at the Institute of Biological Interfaces. His research focusses on the application of bioelectrochemical systems in anode assisted fermentations, bioelectrosynthesis reactions, and the upcycling of biomass waste streams. The core of all processes developed in his lab are engineered and tailored productive biofilms that catalyze continuous processes, while thriving with electrodes as electron donor or acceptors.
He has published more than 70 peer reviewed journal papers, raised several million Euros of third-party funding, and is reviewer for research agencies and international journals.
Chair of the MEEP Scientific Board (SAB)
Prof. Ioannis Ieropoulos is a Professor of Bioenergy and Self-Sustainable Systems and Director of the Bristol BioEnergy Centre, at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory, UWE. He has an interest in waste utilisation and energy autonomy and produced the EcoBot family of robots, which are powered by microbial fuel cells (MFCs) fed on organic waste; the latest self-sustainable robot is Row-bot. He is also the principal investigator on a number of projects, looking also into biodegradable materials.
He has published >80 peer reviewed journal papers, has generated over £6M of research income in the last 6 years and is frequently an invited speaker at numerous conferences and workshops, such as ECS. He is a member of the EPSRC Peer Review College and the Editor in Chief for the Journal of Sustainable Energy Technologies and Assessments (Elsevier).
